  • So I was up in New Joisey and drove past a Lutheran church, the sign out front for the sermon of the week read:

    "God Can't Be Everywhere
That's Why He Gave us Mothers"

As if there aren't enough people and institutions in the world making God seem small. Now the church is joining in. Way to go us.

  • Wow, so it's been a month or so. Here in bullets is a brief summary.

*school is getting progessively more wild. The kids know we only have 4 (counting this one) weeks of school left and they're starting to check out. Unfortunately for me, that means that even my recently acquired loud teacher-voice doesn't cut it. We've been having a lot of chats to the effect of, "When you hear my voice, that doesn't mean talk louder, it means listen." Ahghh!!!

*at long last my dear, sweet husband is home. This tour was shorter than the last one, but it was still a long separation. I've developed a keen respect for spouses of the military. They are better and stronger than I because 13 days about did me in.

*we're looking for new apartments to welcome a new member into our family. No, it's not a baby Florida, it's a Tyler! Yay!! Thus, Aug. 1 marks the beginning of a new era in our lives. I think it'll be cool.

*and lastly, I've recently become obsessed with social justice issues. Next year I'll probably co-sponsor a club at school that will raise awareness about such things. My current flavor of the month is fair trade. I really want to start being cool and painting = signs on my hands. All of this research has deepened my resolve never to shop at Wal-Mart. Anyway, check out these websites: www.maketradefair.org,   www.servv.org,   www.equalexchange.org,   www.globalexchange.org,  and finally www.one.org.  Many of these sites have great products for sale from all over the world that would make wonderfully unique gifts. The great part is, that the profit from such items doesn't go to a corporate giant, but to the people who produced them. Check it out.

The Great Omission: Fulfilling Christ's Commission Completely

So yesterday we were all sitting around at Easter lunch (quick side note: it was so great - so much food - Kristen made a better-than-restaurants salad, there were casseroles, yum!) Well, out of the blue, Kristen says, "Hey Spanish quiz, what does 'campero' mean?" She had seen it on a sign and said it was something to do with chicken, and a cartoon chicken was wearing a cowboy hat! IT WAS A POLLO CAMPERO!!
Where had she seen this? Not 30 minutes away in glorious Silver Spring. I looked online and it was true. It's even billed as "Guatemala's famed fried chicken joint". So, at long last, I've found a bit of home here in the states. There was one of these in the Airport in Guatemala and people would consistenly take home boxes of this chicken to relatives in the states. Every time I flew the plane smelled like Pollo Campero.
Now to those of you who don't know how momentous this is, I have a picture frame in my house with all of the special places from Guatemala in it. Pollo Campero made the cut. This was the only fast food place in Coban, so we ate there a lot. Every time I visited Guatemala I HAD to go there. This is truly great.  I'm so excited. I'm thinking of going down this weekend. Anyone want to come along? It'll be fun!

Ok, quiz for the Guate folks:
I hate to say it, but I can't remember. What was the slogan for Pollo Campero?
something, something, crujiente. Wasn't it 3 words that described the chicken?? Help!!!

    ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡48 Hours!!!!!!!!!

Yes, boys and girls, in just 48 hours the tour will be practically over and I'll get to see my dear, sweet husband again. Let me just tell you, Moose is not the conversationalist I had hoped she'd grow up to be. *Sigh* I love missionaries who go out and get all uncomfortable and stuff and serve God. I especially love it when they come home.
